Congratulations on your decision to embark on the recruitment process here at Drake Univeristy. Joining a Greek organization can be one of the greatest decisions of an individual’s life, and I can’t imagine a better Greek community to join than the one here at Drake. In the coming days you will be faced with many tough decisions: Is Greek life right for you? If so, what house should you join? There are many great houses on campus, but we here at Sigma Chi believe we separate ourselves from the rest. Our continual commitment to excellence impacts not only the lives of our active members, but also Drake University and the Des Moines community as a whole.
Here at Sigma Chi we strive to live balanced, meaningful lives that help us get the most out of our college experiences. We understand that, as students, our first commitment must always be our studies. We work hard in the classroom and it shows: our GPA last spring was a 3.32, well above the All-Men’s average and All-Greek average here at Drake. Furthermore, we hold service to the community in high regard as well. Last semester during our annual philanthropy week, Derby Days, we raised over $4,200 to benefit cancer research. At the same time, we also see the importance of having fun while in college. We have a social calendar that includes exchanges with sororities, date parties, as well as formal twice a year.
Another value we work hard to foster in our fraternity is leadership. Not only will you be given the opportunity to hold leadership positions in the house, all the brothers will support you in your endeavors to become a leader on campus. Sigma Chi offers many annual leadership conferences that brothers can apply to attend, giving members a leg up on attaining prestigious positions on campus such as PMACs, Orientation Leaders, as well as leadership in many other clubs.
Furthermore, we take great pride in our strict no-hazing policy. We always make sure that no brother to be (often known as a pledge) is treated in any manner that may be thought of as degrading. Instead, we use pledgeship as an opportunity to help the new members to grow in their character and convictions.
Ultimately I believe John Wayne, the famous film actor and Sigma Chi alumni, put it best when he once said, “Men join fraternities; Leaders of Men join Sigma Chi.”
Sincerely,
Zach Kadow (Recruitment Chair)
